TikTok has exploded in 2020 – gone from being a vaguely funny alternative app to making video shorts, TikTok is now a fully blown rival to all the other major social media platforms launching stars of their own.
A number of ordinary people have become household names after launching themselves as dancers, comedians or just trendsetters after the app climbed in popularity during the coronavirus lockdown.
TikTok is now so popular that a number of already-established famous faces are turning to the platform as another way to communicate and engage with their fans.
Here are the top 10 most followed stars on TikTok.
Follower count: 86.7 million
The 16-year-old has been dubbed the ‘reigning queen of TikTok’, and gained traction on the app in late 2019 when she posted dance videos to trending songs on the platform (D’Amelio previously trained as a competitive dancer). She has since performed alongside Bebe Rexha and the Jonas Brothers, attended the Super Bowl alongside Jennier Lopez, modelled for Hollister and became an ambassador for Invisalign.
After being incuded on Fortune’s 40 under 40 list, D’Amelio’s net worth is thought to be around $4 million (around £3.1 million).
Her booming popularity has now seen her and her sister Dixie become reality stars, with a television show following their daily life now in production.

Also a competitive dancer, 19-year-old Rae is thought to be TikTok’s highest-earning star after joining the platform in 2019 to upload dance videos.
Her popularity has seen the rising star move to Los Angeles to pursue content creation full time, and has also expanded onto other social media platforms YouTube and Instagram.
Rae has partnered with Reebok, L’Oréal, Hollister and American Eagle, has a podcast with her mother on Spotify and is set to be starring in an upcoming remake of She’s All That. Forbes has estimated Rae’s wealth at around $5 million ($3.9 million).

The 30-year-old became popular on the app for his six-second long videos showing magic tricks and what he calls “digital sleight of hand”. Having established popularity on YouTube and Vine, King moved to TikTok in 2016 and has since gained huge popularity. He is reported to be worth around $3 million (£2.3 million).

The 20-year-old singer was once the most followed person on the app, having first joined in 2015. Her popularity has seen her release eight different singles after signing a deal with Virgin Records, and has since become a brand ambassador for several big names. More recently, she starred in Taylor Swift’s music video The Man. Forbes has put Gray’s net worth as $2.4 million (£1.9 million).

The 28-year-old rose to fame on both TikTok and YouTube for his beatboxing skills, and has also produced his own tracks.
His popularity has seen him work alongside a number of famous artists, including Alicia Keyes, Sean Kingston and Marshmello.

The 16-year-old, who is based in India, is best known for his humourous lip-syncing TikTok videos, and his popularity on the app has seen him feature in many music videos over in India including Yaari Hai, Pahadan and Superstar.

The 20-year-old Florida native first shot to fame on TikTok in 2016 where he would put dance videos and tutorials – he has now spread his coverage to include lip syncing videos and prank videos.
Follower count: 37.8 million
The older sister of TikTok star Charli, Dixie rose to fame on TikTok for her acting and singing.
She’s starred on YouTube’ series Attaway General, and released her first single Be Happy in June this year, as well as launching her own podcast series with Charli. With her various brand endorsements, D’Amelio is thought to have earned $2.9 million (£2.2 million) in the last year.

While the man himself needs no introduction, the former Fresh Prince gained a following on TikTok for his prank videos, his comedy and by providing an insight into his life.
