Montreal food drive aims to help people in need during COVID-19 pandemic

Montrealers are being asked to leave non-perishable items on their doorsteps Sunday as part of a citywide food drive to help people in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dubbed the “September 13th Miracle,” the campaign is working in collaboration with more than 30 food banks across Montreal.

One of the event’s co-organizers, Gillian Aitken, says more than 2,000 volunteers will go door-to-door to collect the donations starting at noon.

Aitken says about 2,500 people have registered online to say they are donating food — but the number could be higher.

The Montreal campaign drew inspiration from similar food drives that took place in Ontario and the Northwest Territories this summer.

Aitken says food banks across Montreal have reported an increase in demand since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
