Millions of people aged between 50 and 70 could be told to stay at home as the Government scrambles to avoid a second national lockdown, according to reports.

Boris Johnson is said to have held a “war games” session with Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Wednesday to work through options of keeping the economy open during a second wave.

It comes after the Prime Minister was forced to slam the brakes on national easing measures and reintroduce lockdown restrictions in areas of the north west following a surge in infections.

Meanwhile, ministers have ditched a pledge to test all care home residents regularly throughout the summer because of “unexpected delays”, The Sunday Times reported.
